We capture the moment between.

An independent studio for portrait, fashion, weddings and commercial work — Johannesburg, and wherever the light is good.

(00) The studio

Photography is the practice of paying attention. We make portraits, weddings, editorials and commercial work — slowly, in good light, with a strong dislike of the obvious.

(03) About

The second
nobody planned.

We began with one camera, one north-facing window and a rule: never ask anyone to smile.

FRAME / 01 is a photography studio built around the seconds that arrive uninvited — the breath before a vow, the glance after a pose, the half-light in a stairwell at four o’clock. Founded in Johannesburg in 2014, we shoot portraits, weddings, fashion editorials and commercial work with one instinct: wait, then be ready.

We work in small crews, mostly on natural light and a handful of well-loved lenses, and we print — because a photograph feels different when you can hold it. Every commission is edited by hand, sequenced like a film and delivered as a considered set, never a dump of files.

  1. i.

    Wait

The best frame is usually the one after the one you were told to take.

  2. ii.

    Light

We follow it, borrow it, and occasionally argue with it.

  3. iii.

    Restraint

Fewer, better pictures — edited until only the necessary ones remain.

(04) Services

What we
make.

Every commission starts with a conversation, not a package.

  • 01

    Portrait

Personal, artist and executive portraits, made in the studio or at home in the light you already live in. Sittings run two to three hours; you receive a small, finished set.

  • 02

    Wedding

Documentary-led coverage for people who’d rather be present than posed. One or two photographers, unhurried, from getting ready to the last dance.

  • 03

    Commercial

Spaces, products and people for hospitality, architecture and design brands — lit precisely, retouched invisibly.

  • 04

    Brand Campaigns

Concept to final selects: creative direction, casting, production and photography for launches and seasonal campaigns.

  • 05

    Editorial

Stories for independent magazines and fashion houses; treatment, styling and shooting in a single, consistent voice.

The second between

Why the frame after the pose is usually the one we keep.

Every sitting has a rhythm. There is the ask, the pose, the small exhale when someone thinks the picture has been taken — and then, for about a second, they are simply themselves. We learned early to keep the camera up through the exhale.

It’s not a trick, and it isn’t candid in the way the word usually implies. It’s a habit of attention: stay quiet, stay ready, and let the person forget they are being looked at.

Weddings in hard light

Noon sun is not the enemy. A short case for shadow.

Ask most photographers and they will tell you to avoid the middle of the day. We’ve stopped agreeing. Hard light draws edges — the fold of a veil, the line of a jaw — and a single wall can become a whole studio.

The trick is to choose the place before the moment: find the shadow, then invite the day to walk into it.

Printing again

Silver, paper and the case for making things you can hold.

Still / Moving was always meant to be a print project. A photograph on a screen is a rumour; on paper it becomes an object with weight, edges and a place on a wall.

We now print every finished series, in small runs, and hang the first proof in the studio for a month before anything is signed off.
